What is masseteric hypertrophy?

Masseteric hypertrophy is overdevelopment of the masseter muscle. This strong muscle is used for speaking and chewing every day, but due to dysfunction or congenital abnormality it may become enlarged, leading to a hard, square appearance of the jaw. It can be present on one or both sides of the face.

Is masseteric hypertrophy the same as "square face"?

Sometimes the phrase "square face" is used to describe masseteric hypertrophy, but more commonly square face is simply used to describe one of the four (or six) normal face shapes.

What causes masseteric hypertrophy?
