Questions about liposuction
Liposuction is one of the top cosmetic procedures in the U.S. with more than 300,000 surgeries performed each year. Kim Facial Plastic Surgery of Atlanta specializes in the latest liposuction procedures and can answer any questions about liposuction you may have.
What is liposuction?
Liposuction is a procedure that literally vacuums fat deposits out from under your skin. A small tube, called a cannula, is hooked up to a suction device and inserted into the dermal layer of skin where the fat resides. Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Kim can use this procedure to shape or model your face or other parts of your body, giving it a more attractive appearance by getting rid of fat deposits that give you an asymmetrical or undesirable appearance.
Is liposuction a weight loss solution?
Liposuction is not a weight loss solution. In fact, only approximately five liters of fat may safely be removed at any one time, which is equivalent to about ten pounds. Liposuction is best considered for areas that seem to be resistant to other forms of weight loss like dieting and exercise.
Can liposuction be performed in the facial region?
Liposuction can be performed in any area of the body where excess fat needs to be removed, including:
- Face
- Neck
- Arms
- Waist
- Thighs
- Buttocks
Other procedures performed by Dr. Kim, such as a facelift, may be combined with liposuction to improve the underlying structure of the treated area.
What are the different types of liposuction?
Depending on your specific needs, Dr. Kim may use one of a number of liposuction procedures. The most common techniques are:
- Wet liposuction – A small amount of fluid, consisting of saline, lidocaine, and epinephrine is injected into the treatment are to anesthetize the area and reduce bleeding. Typically, the amount of fluid is less than the volume of fat that is to be removed.
- Tumescent liposuction – Three to four times as much fluid is injected into the skin to help loosen the fat molecules which aides in the removal process. The fluid must be introduced slowly to ensure that your body's fluids do not become imbalanced.
- Ultrasound-assisted liposuction – The ultrasound device is a special cannula that transmits ultrasonic vibrations during the suctioning process to help break up fat cell for easy removal.
Is liposuction dangerous?
As with all surgical procedures, there are certain risks with liposuction, some of which can be very serious. Some of the risks include:
- Skin necrosis or tissue death
- Fluid imbalance
- Lidocaine toxicity
- Thromboembolism
To minimize these risks it is important to find a qualified specialist with plenty of experience with all types of liposuction procedure. These risks should be taken seriously and discussed thoroughly with Dr. Kim prior to undergoing any surgical procedure.
