Laser Resurfacing

Atlanta, Georgia

Thanks to major improvements to laser technology, laser resurfacing has become an attractive cosmetic treatment option for reducing blemishes and minor skin irritations, quickly and painlessly. Kim Facial Plastic Surgery in Atlanta is on the cutting edge of laser resurfacing technology and can work up a comprehensive rejuvenation plan for you.

Indications

Like other resurfacing techniques, laser resurfacing traumatizes the outer layer of skin, which promotes new skin growth, giving you a younger, fresher layer of surface skin. Laser skin resurfacing is used to treat minor skin abnormalities including:

  • Acne scars
  • Sun damage
  • Stretch marks
  • Hyper pigmentation
  • Spider veins

Using a laser allows Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Kim to direct the treatment to more targeted areas and penetrate deeper into the skin than other treatment options.

Procedure

The procedure may take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour depending on how much of your skin surface is to be treated. In most cases, local anesthesia is used, but general anesthesia may be recommended when treating deeper layers of skin. Dr. Kim moves the laser around with one or two passes doing the trick for most problems. The outer layers of skin are ablated and eventually replaced with new skin without most of the blemishes.

Types of Lasers

Laser technology is improving all the time. Kim Facial Plastic Surgery uses the very latest to ensure fast and effective rejuvenation. The two lasers Dr. Kim uses include:

  • Fraxel is a fractional laser, which refers to the way the light is transmitted onto the skin. Hundreds or thousands of pinpoints of laser light may be used per square inch of the treatment area. The longer the laser remains over one area, or the number of passes determines how deeply it penetrates.
  • Erbium is the newest type of laser and is designed to remove skin more precisely. Dr. Kim uses the Erbium laser for facial laser resurfacing procedures.

Post Treatment

Following treatment, you may feel like you have mild sunburn and may experience the same minor pain and itching. Typically, these effects only last a day or two. If necessary, pain may be controlled with over the counter medications. Laser resurfacing is not permanent. Your new skin will eventually age again and treatment may need to be repeated.
