Nose Surgery (Rhinoplasty)
|
Rhinoplasty
is surgery to the nose to reshape and refine nasal bones
and cartilage for a variety of reasons; to change the
appearance of the nose to better complement the face;
correct injury or birth defect; and/or improve breathing
(deviated septum). The nose may be modified to reduce
or increase the size of the bridge, slope, angle or
nostrils. Rhinoplasty may be performed on all age groups
including the elderly and teens, but most surgeons advise
waiting until patients are at least 14 before undergoing
this type of surgery, due to the fact that the nose
may not be fully developed before that time. Rhinoplasty
may also be combined with chin augmentation to improve
the profile.
|
|
The
typical method of surgery is to separate the skin of
the nose from the underlying skeleton, reshape the bone
and cartilage, and re-cover it with the skin. Incisions
are usually placed inside the nose hidden from view.
|
|
Patients
will be provided with detailed instruction for post-operative
care at the time of surgery. Usual recovery from rhinoplasty
takes one to two weeks at which time the dressings are
removed. Minor swelling and bruising can be eased with
cold compresses and mild pain medication may offer effective
relief for initial discomfort.
**Insurance does not usually cover
cosmetic surgery, although surgery to improve the nose
may be considered reconstructive if due to birth defect,
injury, or nasal airway function. Rhinoplasty may possibly
be reimbursable by major medical insurance. It is the
patient’s responsibility to seek approval from
his/her insurance carrier.
