1)
Why should I choose a facial plastic surgeon as opposed to
a general plastic surgeon?
|
There
are many different types of physicians, so it is important
to choose one who is skilled and educated in the particular
specialty in which you need services. Facial plastic surgeons
like Dr. Kim focus on cosmetic and reconstructive surgery
of the face, head, and neck and are certified by the American
Board of Otolaryngology, approved by the American Board of
Medical Specialties. The American Board of Facial Plastic
& Reconstructive Surgery qualifies, reviews, and certifies
surgeons who perform facial and reconstructive surgery. Plastic
surgery is a serious step, so whether you have Dr. Kim perform
your procedure or you choose another surgeon, it is wise to
verify his/her credentials for your own peace of mind. |
|
2)
Should I have plastic surgery or opt for one of the less invasive
procedures you offer?
|
The
decision to have cosmetic surgery is unique to the individual.
It is a long-term if not lifelong choice and should not be
made impulsively. Only you can weigh your concerns and desires
against all other variables to determine if surgery is the
right option for you. It’s best to become as well informed
as possible, so your ultimate choice is one made with confidence.
Discuss your goals with Dr. Kim and he can provide you with
a variety of alternatives. Be sure to ask about the different
skin rejuvenating/resurfacing options available, as well.
After your consultation, you can make the choice to either
move ahead with surgery, try a less invasive procedure, or
a combination of both. |
|
3)
Is it possible to improve my appearance with cosmetic surgery
without looking fake or overdone?
|
Dr.
Kim has a conservative approach that subtly enhances his patient’s
natural appearance without appearing artificial. Cosmetic
surgery should not appear plastic or fake. In fact, the changes
should subtly enhance your natural look, so people won’t
guess you’ve had work done. When choosing a doctor,
be sure to ask questions and inquire about seeing the physician’s
work. Viewing Dr. Kim’s impressive ‘Before and
After’ photograph portfolio will give you an excellent
idea of how his expertise can make even the most dramatic
results appear natural. |
|
4)
How much downtime should I expect after surgery?
|
Typically,
facial plastic surgery is performed in an outpatient setting
and most patients go home the same day as their procedure.
The recovery process depends on the individual and how invasive
and extensive the surgery. In most cases, you will be able
to resume your normal activity, with some caution, within
one week. During your follow-up appointment(s), Dr. Kim will
assess your progress and advise you on how quickly to resume
activities. Some skin rejuvenating procedures can be performed
while you are awake and require absolutely no downtime (e.g.,
Botox, collagen, skin peels, IPL, and Restylane/Radiess injections). |
|
5)
What are the risks of surgery?
|
There
is always a certain level of minimal risk associated with
any surgery, which varies depending on the extent of the procedure.
Modern medical advances in anesthesia, monitoring, and pre-operative
testing have greatly diminished the risk-factors associated
with surgery, but a patient can have adverse reactions to
anesthesia or have postoperative complications even if the
surgery is performed with the utmost surgeon skill and cautiousness.
It is beneficial to be aware of possible complications to
limit your apprehension, but too much over-analysis can cause
undue stress and lead to foregoing a procedure that has very
little associated risk. |
|
6)
Will health insurance cover any of my expenses?
|
Insurance
companies do not usually cover cosmetic procedures, but some
surgeries have both functional and cosmetic components. For
example, in the case of rhinoplasty, a patient who needs to
improve his/her nasal breathing may opt to change the appearance
of their nose at the same time. The functional part of the
surgery would be billed to the insurance company, while the
cosmetic portion would be the patient’s responsibility.
Cosmetic surgery to improve genetic deformity or traumatic
injury may be reimbursable in whole or part by your insurance
company. It is worth the effort to check with your insurance
carrier on the degree of coverage.
