Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)
|
Eyelid
surgery improves the aged appearance caused by droopy
eyelids and under-eye puffiness. The procedure may be
done on the upper or lower eyelids or both and involves
removing excess fat, muscle, and skin to reveal a more
refreshed, younger, and well-rested expression. Eyelid
surgery may be performed alone or along with a browlift,
facelift, or skin resurfacing for optimal effect.

Upper
Eyelid Surgery involves making an incision in the natural
fold of the upper eyelid, removing excess fat, muscle
and loose skin, and fine suturing to minimize scar visibility.
In Lower Eyelid Surgery, an incision is made along the
lashline and smile creases of the lower eyelid. Excess
fat, muscle, and skin are removed followed by fine suturing.
In the case of lower eyelid puffiness, a Transconjunctival
Blepharoplasty is performed in which an incision is
made and excess fat is removed from inside the lower
eyelid. The sutures in this case are self-dissolving
and leave no visible scar.

Patients
will be provided with detailed instruction for post-operative
care at the time of surgery. After surgery, it is not
necessary to cover the eyes, although an anti-drying
ointment may be advised. Pain medication may be prescribed
and minor bruising and swelling can be reduced with
cold compresses and head elevation. The patient will
be instructed on eye-cleaning care and possible use
of eyedrops. Permanent sutures will be removed in less
than a week while self-dissolving sutures do not require
removal..
**Insurance does not usually cover
cosmetic surgery, although surgery to improve the nose
may be considered reconstructive if due to birth defect,
injury, or nasal airway function. Rhinoplasty may possibly
be reimbursable by major medical insurance. It is the
patient’s responsibility to seek approval from
his/her insurance carrier.
