Facial Chemical Peel
Description
The skin is a constantly rejuvenating organ. It maintains itself by shedding the outer, dead layers and replacing them with new, fresher ones from below. When we are young, the process of shedding skin is relatively quick, maintaining a youthful hue, but as we age, we shed skin less rapidly, meaning that the skin on the surface of our face is older by the time it reaches the surface, and it stays on the surface longer. Our skin looks older because it is older, and is more subject to drying out, wrinkling, and sun damage as a result. But skin rejuvenation methods like chemical peels, like other resurfacing techniques, speeds up the process of shedding skin.
The advantage of facial chemical peels is that it can be done using many different techniques. Peels of varying depths and chemical compositions can be used to take off only a thin layer of skin, or a thicker layer, depending on the issues you want to address.
Light Peels
Light peels are often alphahydroxy acids (AHAs), such as fruit acids, glycolic acid, or lactic acid. They can improve dry skin, acne, fine wrinkling, mild sun damage, and may lessen uneven pigmentation. Light peels achieve their results gradually, but because they have such a low impact, you can have them as frequently as once a week to provide a subtle, natural-seeming results.
Medium Peels
Medium peels have a deeper impact, and are the most commonly used. Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) is one of the most commonly used chemicals for a medium peel. Medium peels provide more have a bigger impact on blemishes, wrinkling, sun damage, and uneven pigmentation with fewer treatments, but can cause pain and the newly-exposed skin is vulnerable to sun damage.
Deep Peels
These have essentially disappeared from most plastic surgeon’s hands since now the laser peels are so effective and improved. However, on select occasions, the deep peels can be performed and should only be administered by licensed health care professionals, as they use the dangerous chemical phenol, but when properly utilized they provide a dramatic remedy for skin discoloration, wrinkles, and sun damage. Phenol can have a bleaching effect on skin, so you should decide whether you can accept that side effect before getting the treatment. Deep peels can be painful and result in significant swelling. You may have to take time off from work following your deep peel.
