The masseter is the main muscle in the jaw, and is used every day when we chew or speak.  Hypertrophy is when the muscle becomes enlarged through exercise and is completely normal. However, excessive hypertrophy in the jaw is possible through teeth grinding. In this case, the jaw may appear squared.

The appearance of a squared jaw may be present in people who don’t grind their teeth, as well as certain Asian ethnic groups. BOTOX® is commonly used to help lessen the appearance of wrinkles. The botulinum toxin in it paralyzes the muscles in the area where BOTOX® is injected, blocking their use for several months. It was discovered that using BOTOX® for facial sculpting was a possibility several years ago. By injecting the area of the masseter, BOTOX® helps to atrophy the muscle and give the face a thinner appearance.

Using BOTOX® for masseteric hypertrophy is a completely safe way to narrow the face. Patients will see results within weeks of injection and several injections can keep the masseter atrophied for up to a year before further injections area needed.
