Autologous Fat Injection
Atlanta, Georgia
Description
The term autologous refers to use of your own fatty tissue. An autologous fat injection takes fat from one area of the body and injects it into another area.
As cosmetic surgery continues to become more popular worldwide, both surgical and non-surgical (non-invasive) procedures are becoming better-known and more often requested. There are increasing numbers of artificial fillers, such as Restylane, Radiesse, and Sculptra. Each has advantages and disadvantages, and a consultation with your cosmetic surgeon is the best way to learn more and decide which one would do the best job for you.
The purpose of injectable fillers is to plump up the face where aging has started to create wrinkles or sagging. Each filler works a different way to do this, and lasts for a different amount of time. All must be periodically repeated.
How is a fat transfer done?
There are three steps.
- With gentle liposuction and a special cannula, so as not to damage the cells, fat is removed from an area where you have excess fat. This could be the jowls, upper arms, abdomen, thighs, or buttocks
- The fat cells are isolated from other cells such as lymph fluid, by spinning them at a high speed in a centrifuge. They are cleansed and any damaged cells are removed.
- The fat is injected to the targeted area, which has already been designated. A separate syringe is used, and cells are injected at specific depths to achieve the desired results
If you have the autologous fat injection procedure done alone, with no others at the same time, you will just need local anesthetic. If you’re feeling apprehensive, you can be given an oral sedative to calm you.

Recovery
At first there will be some swelling and bruising at one or both sites: donor site and treatment site. It should not last more than a few days. Many people return to work and normal activities the next day.
Advantages of autologous fat injection
The biggest advantage is that you will have no allergic reaction to the injections. Since it’s your own fatty tissue, your body will recognize it and not reject it as a foreign body. This also means there is no need for any allergy testing beforehand.
Results are immediately visible. Unlike the results of artificial fillers, results are very long-lasting and could even be permanent. So you will probably not have to repeat the procedure, as is done with injectable fillers after a few months or a year or two.
The best way to ensure that you have an easy recovery and excellent results is to choose an excellent and experienced cosmetic surgeon to do this procedure for you.
