Asian Rhinoplasty
Atlanta, Georgia
An Asian face has a different type of beauty and different proportions than are typical in a Caucasian, African, or other type of face. Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Kim is familiar with the differences in style and can give you an Asian nose surgery that is done in a unique way often called ethnic rhinoplasty.
Usually, an Asian nose is flatter and wider and has less tip definition than a Caucasian nose. An Asian patient would typically like to have it made a bit taller and more narrow, whereas a Caucasian patient often wants a smaller nose with no Roman hump and a less prominent tip.
Before performing any type of facial plastic surgery, Dr. Kim will talk with you to learn what your goals and preferences are, and also what your concerns are. He will explain the different ways of doing a rhinoplasty and how he can customize the procedure to achieve the results you want.
Potential Changes of an Asian Rhinoplasty
Plastic surgery can modify any part of the nose according to the facial appearance you would like to have. It can:
- Narrow the nasal bridge
- Increase the height of the bridge
- Make the nostrils a little more narrow
- Enlarge the overall nasal size
- Give the nose tip more definition
- Make the nose more symmetrical
Create a more harmonious shape for the nose in relationship to the rest of the face
These are cosmetic changes. If you have any trouble with breathing because you have a deviated septum (the bony division between the nostrils), Dr. Kim can include this in your rhinoplasty. He can make the septum straight so the two nostrils are equal in size and you can breathe comfortably lying on either your right side or left side when you sleep.
The Rhinoplasty Recovery Period
Dr. Kim will give you a printed sheet with instructions on how to care for yourself during recovery. It is very important to follow these instructions exactly, as your final surgical results will depend partly on that. You will also need to come for several follow-up visits so Dr. Kim can be sure you are progressing well.
Your immediate recovery will last up to four weeks, during which time bruising and swelling will fade, any mild bleeding will stop, discomfort will largely resolve, and Dr. Kim will remove any dressing, splint, stitches or packing that was used temporarily.
After that first four weeks or so, there may still be a little swelling and it is sometimes as long as twelve months before all healing is complete and your final cosmetic improvements are evident.
Would My Surgery Cost Be Covered?
Insurance companies do not pay for purely cosmetic surgery but if your reason for having an Asian Rhinoplasty is to improve breathing, correct a birth defect, or restore nasal features after an injury, the cost may likely be covered. If your procedure is done for both cosmetic and functional reasons, part of the cost may be covered. Be sure and check with your insurance company to learn the facts.
