Asian Blepharoplasty
Atlanta, Georgia
What, exactly, is Asian Blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty is eyelid surgery that helps to improve the aged appearance that droopy eyelids and under-eye puffiness can cause. Blepharoplasty can be performed on the upper eyelids, the lower eyelids, or both during the same procedure. The purpose of the surgery is to remove excess fat, muscle, and skin to reveal a younger-looking, more refreshed-looking expression. Asian blepharoplasty is just a term we use to describe eyelid surgery intended to remove the “heavy eyelid” appearance of eyes while maintaining the patient’s Asian ethnicity.
Do all cosmetic surgeons perform this procedure?
While we’re not sure if all perform this procedure, we do know that Dr. Kun Kim of Kim Facial Plastic Surgery in Atlanta, Georgia has highly specialized experience in the variations that are involved in this type of intricate surgery. Please see our Before & After Gallery of Photos to see the remarkable changes Dr. Kim can make in the shape and appearance of your eyes.
How are Asian eyes different from Caucasian eyes?
Asians naturally have more fat in the upper eyelids than Caucasians, which can cause “overhanging” upper eyelid skin. This is what prompts many Asian patients to seek Asian Blepharoplasty. Many Asians are born with a double eyelid while others are born with a single eyelid (or an eyelid without a fold or crease). The majority of our patients seeking this surgery want a natural-looking fold.
Who is a good candidate for this surgery?
Dr. Kim has performed this surgery on men and women of all ages. During your initial consultation at our office, you will meet with Dr. Kim, and together you will discuss which surgical option will work best for the results you desire.
Has Dr. Kim performed this surgery often?
Yes, in fact, this is the surgery that Dr. Kim most often performs and is also known as Westernization Blepharoplasty. He performs approximately 100-150 of these surgeries in his office each year. The surgery only takes 20-30 minutes.
Why do Asians seek this surgery?
Many patients have shared stories of childhood ridicule, being accused of being asleep, being accused of looking “secretive,” and just being dissatisfied with the appearance of their eyes. After all, our eyes are generally the feature people first notice about us. This surgery results in a more “open” looking eye for the Asian patient. This surgery is not done to make Asians look more Caucasian. Even the President and First Lady of Korea have had this surgery performed.
