In their attempts to repair the massive damage caused by twentieth century weaponry, physicians developed many techniques that are still used in plastic surgery today.

Doctors worked to correct birth defects such as cleft palates, and to improve the appearance of patients who desired this treatment. As this type of surgery became more widespread, organizations such as the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (ASPRS) came into being. Founded in 1931 as the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, ASPRS still provides information, education, and certification for doctors focusing on plastic surgery techniques.

Today, plastic surgery techniques continue to improve as surgeons make use of new, innovative tools and procedures.
